Efficiency Engineering Inc. (EE)is very proud to announce that the CARA Operations Head Office located in Vaughan, ON has achieved LEED GOLD certification.

EE joined CARA’s design and construction team as the LEED Accredited Professional guiding the team in sustainable design and construction practices.

CARA’s mandate was to construct a building with exceptional occupant comfort, efficiency, and productivity in mind. With this is mind, 39 credits were targeted to ensure all aspects of this goal was met.

Cara_signOccupant comfort and health were foremost in the Owner’s eye, so interior air quality was addressed during the construction phase and on through the occupancy phase. During construction special care was taken to ensure all materials were kept clean and free of contaminates. The installation of low VOC emitting carpet, flooring, paint and laminates all contribute to healthy interior environment during installation and continuing on into the occupancy stage.  CARA has also taken the next step in continuing to supporting a healthy work space for all occupants by ensuring a high –performance green cleaning program along with a integrated  pest management and landscape management plan are carried out.

Keeping occupant comfort and productivity in mind, the design team incorporated skylights and large windows into CARA’s Head Office layout to take advantage of daylighting in over 87% of all regularly occupied rooms and boosts direct line of sight to the outdoor environment in over 96% of the regularly occupied space. The HVAC systems were designed not only to be highly efficient but thermal comfort design was addressed.

CARA’s goal of “efficiency” was met by constructing a building designed to achieve 42% reduction in energy cost compared to the MNECB reference building. Lighting, HVAC and envelope were not only designed with efficiency in mind but sustainability. Lighting design included low or no mercury content light sources, while building materials were selected for long term durability. Recycled materials and regionally available materials were also utilized to reduce the stress on the environment. Further reducing stress on the environment, the construction team diverted over 95% of construction waste from landfills by reducing waste and recycling materials.Cara-Foods-Head-Office
