Summary

The Engineering Operations Manager is directly responsible for the planning and designing of projects in the department. The Engineering Operations Manager develops and plans the design of all major projects while setting and maintaining the established budgets. He/she will be responsible for staff productivity and must maintain effective staff utilization targets. He/she leads the development of the department including: performance management and ensuring training necessary for projects is completed. The Engineering Operations Manager coordinates and directs projects, staff and sets goals, budgets and timelines for active projects.

Job Duties:

  • Assign, direct, and evaluate employee’s work; and oversee the development and maintenance of staff competence.
  • Coordinate and direct projects, making detailed plans to accomplish goals and directing the integration of technical activities.
  • Plan, direct, and coordinate site work with other staff activities.
  • Manage staff by coaching and mentoring as appropriate to improve performance.
  • Analyze technology, and resource needs to plan and assess the feasibility of projects.
  • Provide technical oversight and coordination of project engineering work; through project coordination meetings and other means.
  • Monitor progress against project schedules and budgets; recommends allocation of resources as required to accomplish goals.
  • Direct, review, and approve design and project changes as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement policies, standards and procedures for the engineering and technical work performed in the firm.
  • Perform administrative functions such as reviewing and writing reports, approving expenditures, enforcing rules, and making decisions about the purchase of materials or services.
  • Review and recommend or approve contracts and cost estimates.
  • Present and explain proposals, reports, and findings to clients.
  • Direct the coordination of special projects for the Engineering Department.
  • After project budget approval, assign projects to engineering staff; set priorities and adjust workload accordingly.
  • Communicate effectively with Supervisors, Peers, and Subordinates.
  • Making Decisions and Solving Problems -- Analyzing information and evaluating results to choose the best solution and solve problems.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Prerequisite Skills and Experience:

  • Engineering degree in an appropriate field,Engineering Technology Diploma or equivalent.
  • 7 or more years of Engineering experience
  • P.Eng preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of electrical and mechanical engineering theories and principles as they relate to buildings
  • 3 or more years experience in an Engineering Department with direct responsibility for the design and/or construction portion of the department
  • Experience with building retrofit design
  • 2 or more years in a supervisory role, managing professionals
  • Strong presentation, oratory, and verbal skills
  • Able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with all levels of the organization, including executives
  • Able to communicate ideas and recommendations to non-engineer team members in a clear manner
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ASHRAE HVAC standards such as 62.1 and 90.1
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Ontario building and electrical codes
  • Strong problem identification and problem resolution skills
  • Able to apply the right mathematical methods and formulas to problem solving
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Able to create alternative solutions to problems

We are looking for an HVAC Design Engineer with at least three to four years experience. A significant part of that experience must be on Canadian building retrofit projects. The successful candidate will design upgrades to building mechanical systems, helping clients solve operating problems and reduce their impact on our environment. During the probationary period, he/she will work under the guidance of senior staff, but will be responsible to manage and deliver projects after that time.

Primary Activities:

  • Plan the execution of engineering projects, including determining staffing requirements and staff availability.
  • Liaison with business partners.
  • Make sales presentations.
  • Manage client expectations and information flows.
  • Perform detailed design of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems.
  • Supervise technical support staff.
  • Produce concise, accurate, and grammatically correct written reports and specifications.
  • Ensure quality of deliverable reports, drawings, and specifications.
  • A senior engineer will also be expected to move quickly into sales and management roles.

Skills and Experience:

  • Strong oral and written English language skills.
  • P.Eng. candidate.
  • Familiarity with Canadian building codes and standards.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Able to bring in projects on budget and on time.

A mechanical engineer familiar with building mechanical and electrical systems, with a passionate belief in the need to conserve resources would be an ideal fit. If he/she chooses, the successful candidate will have significant influence on the type of projects undertaken. We are looking for an experienced CAD Operator to work with engineers to design and lay out substantial building mechanical retrofit projects.

Primary Activities to include:

  • Single and double-line piping layout using AutoCAD 2016 or higher
  • Accurate site takeoffs
  • Accurate schematics of existing piping systems, gathered only from site investigations
  • Occasional single and double-line duct layout using AutoCAD 2016 or higher
  • Following prescribed internal quality control processes and naming conventions
  • Establishing, maintaining CAD drawing standards
  • Integrating Client Specific standards
  • DDC control system point layouts

Skills and Experience:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with a technical certificate in a Mechanical Engineering Technology, Buildings Technology, or related program program
  • Must have at least 1 year CAD work experience, ideally with design drawings and laying out HVAC systems
  • Working knowledge of Engineering Standards, procedures, and processes
  • Quality focused
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects concurrently

We are looking for University or Post-Secondary graduates with degrees/diplomas in mechanical engineering, energy auditing or a related discipline. Applicants should have 2-3 years practical experience in the Energy Auditing field. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of senior staff to learn the science of energy auditing and help clients reduce their impact on our environment.

He/she will also have the opportunity to learn the HVAC design process by taking part in major mechanical/electrical retrofit projects in buildings. A CEM designation would be considered an asset.

Primary Activities:

  • Accurately collect information on building systems and equipment, including schematics of piping and air handling systems.
  • Interview building site staff for background information and to fill in missing data.
  • Draw schematics of piping and air handling systems.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings.
  • Perform costing and savings calculations for energy efficiency and conservation opportunities.
  • Produce concise, accurate, and grammatically correct written reports.
  • Continuously contribute to software system internal bug reports. Suggest system improvements.
  • A Senior Energy Auditor will be required to sell projects and manage staff.

Primary Skills:
