O.Reg. 20/17: Ontario’s Reporting of Energy Consumption and Water Use under the Green Energy Act, 2009.

On July 1, 2017, the reporting of energy consumption and water use will become mandatory in the Province of Ontario.

Who needs to report?  Any building over 50,000 ft² or any multi-unit residential building over 10 units.

Who is exempt?  Data Centres, trading floors, public buildings (federal, provincial and municipal), most industrial and agricultural will be exempt.

The reporting will be required on an annual basis, and will be phased in over a number of years as follows:

July 1, 2018: Reporting deadline for buildings over 250,000 ft² for 2017 consumption.  Although the wording of the O.Reg. is somewhat ambiguous, it appears that multi-unit residential buildings with more than 10 units will also need to report at this time.

July 1, 2019: Reporting deadline for buildings over 100,000 ft² for 2018 consumption.

July 1, 2020: Reporting deadline for buildings over 50,000 ft² for 2019 consumption.

Reporting will be through Energy Star Portfolio Manager.
