DETAILED DESIGN

Design of ground source heating and cooling system. Annual GHG reduction of 502 tonnes of eCO2 over base design from this project.

Toronto South Detention Centre, the largest jail in Ontario, was built as part of a P3 (Public – Private Partnership) project.  Efficiency Engineering was part of the design team (ITS – Integrated Team Solutions)  that also included Ellis-Don (design/build contractor) and Johnson Controls (performance guarantor and operations & maintenance contractor).  Our role on the ITS bidding team was to improve the overall bid score through renewable and conservation options.  Our option of a 210 ton ground source heating and cooling system was critical in ITS being awarded the project.

Once ITS was awarded the project, EE’s role expanded to detailed design and construction management of the ground source system.  The detailed design included further analysis, sizing, equipment selection, detailed design and construction management of the installation of a ground source heating and cooling system.  The system was designed to be connected to the base design boilers and chillers.  The heat pumps are the primary source of heating and cooling.

Solution:

  • Field Location:  Under Staff Parking Lot

  • Ground Loop Heat Exchanger (GLHE) design

    • 72 Vertical Bore Holes, 575 feet deep, spaced 30’ apart in a 6×12 grid.

  • 210 ton cooling, 2,096 MBH heating

    • 3×70 ton Multi-Stack heat pumps

  • Seasonal system balanced between heating and cooling to within 2%, to ensure ground temperatures do not change over time.

  • Annual GHG Reduction of 502 tonnes eCO2 over base design.
